Strabane native Michael Bailey, 22, has been hard at work putting together Mark Twain’s The Diary of Adam and Eve, which will hit the stage on Thursday at St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Waterdown.

Bailey anticipates the production to be “very well received” by the Flamborough community and the St. Thomas congregation as the play itself tells the story of Adam and Eve “with a little bit of a comedic twist to it.”

“It’s a great way of taking a story we are all familiar with and it teaches you a great deal about love and relationships,” he said.

Four years ago, Bailey directed a production for a local church in Dundas. Shortly thereafter, members of St. Thomas approached him to put on a similar production for the Waterdown parish.

“As soon as they asked me, I got my acceptance letter from New York for school, so I went off to school,” he explained.

Having just graduated from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York, Bailey has finally found the time to focus on a theatrical performance for St. Thomas. Instead of working alongside members of the local church, Bailey suggested he bring his own cast and crew members from New York to Waterdown.

“I asked my friends in New York and they were excited about the idea,” said Bailey, adding that five other individuals will be joining him in The Diary of Adam and Eve on the set and behind the scenes. These individuals also help build his production company, After-Party Productions.

Aside from directing the performance, Bailey will be playing the role of Adam. “It’s one of those plays you love to do as an actor,” he said.

“You get to have fun with it.”

With a love for theatre, Bailey told the Review that he has always had a knack for the dramatic arts and knew at an early age that he wanted to pursue his passion professionally.

Currently residing in Manhattan, Bailey hopes to have a few of his production company’s short films featured in various film festivals and aspires to produce some of his own feature films.

Describing the film industry as “tough” he said, “You have to deal with a whole lot of rejection. It’s not so much what you know, it’s who you know.”

The Diary of Adam and Eve is slated to run April 24-26 at St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church (715 Centre Rd., Waterdown). The doors open at 7 p.m.; the curtain will rise at 8. Tickets are $12 and can be obtained by contacting the church at (905) 689-4587.
