Rising Star dancers wrap up award-filled season

The Dance Company from Rising Star Performing Arts completed its 21st season by winning several overall awards as well as special recognition in several categories.

The Mini Company was awarded top junior recreational at Terpsichore and was second overall junior group at Starbeat for their tap group "Lollipop" and second overall junior recreational and third overall junior at Starbeat for their ballet quartet, Swiss Miss. Swiss Miss went on to win overall comp Level 1 junior group at Shine as well as the overall comp Level 1 ballet. Lollipop was also recognized as being "polished to perfection," as well as for overall excellence.

The intermediate company had a strong showing at "Sur La Pointe" and was selected overall intermediate group for its portrayal of "The Royal Peacocks."

Also placing well was the ballet group "The Snowflakes." Winning second overall mini group at Terpsichore, it was also commended for its sense of flow.

At Dance Connection, the senior musical theatre threesome of Jordan Cole, Nicole Martin and Lauren Uloth was praised its characterizations in "Easy Street" and awarded overall senior duet/trio.

The effective pairing of sisters Brie and Maddie Legault and their presentation of the Stepsisters from Cinderella achieved overall intermediate duet or trio at Terpsichore as well as overall character ballet at Shine. They were also praised for their communication and interaction.

Gabrielle Ranger, who will be attending The National Ballet this summer, was commended for her beauty and poise while performing "The Music Box." She received the first overall soloist, top soloist and overall ballet at Shine. Her instructor, Audrey Tan, was awarded the overall junior choreography. Gabrielle also won second overall soloist (age 10) at Starbeat.

Deanna Johnston's ballet solo, "The Swan," was recognized for its turn out and control with an overall intermediate solo at Terpsichore, overall 11-year-old solo at Starbeat as well as being selected as a judges' choice at Shine.

Emily Cole's tap solo "I'm Gonna Live 'Til I Die" received top 12-year-old solo at Starbeat. She was also awarded a scholarship to continue her training in tap. At Terpsichore, she received fourth overall junior solo and will participate in an opening routine as well as a solo showdown at the national championships. She also received judging awards in recognition of her execution and timing.

First-time soloist Kelly Martin was praised for her flexibility and long legs, and was awarded first overall novice at Terpsichore and also captured the same title at Shine. She will also be attending The National Ballet School this summer.

Alisse DePelino, who was singled out for her great leaps, received third overall novice at Terpsichore.

In the Senior divisions, Nicole Martin received first overall recreational at Terpsichore and first overall comp Level 1 and top soloist comp Level 1 at Shine for her ballet solo "Spanish Dance" and lyrical solo "To Where You Are."

Brie Legault was recognized with a fourth overall solo at Terpsichore for her tap performance, "Pennies from Heaven."

Rounding out the season, Acting awards were won by Rachel Hutter for "Characterization," and Meghan Arbuckle for "Shakespeare." A tap technique award was presented to Emily Cole and Maddy Hauzar for "N'Synch." A captivating costume award went to the intermediate jazz company and a set design award to Sean Ranger.

Congratulations to the dancers and their instructors Georene Cea, Audrey Tan, Katie McLeish and Melanie Hedden-Perron.
