Elvis-fest promises fun Rockton competition slated for July 12

The King will be "in the building" next Saturday (July 12), at the Rockton Fairgrounds.

In fact, there will be a number of local Elvis sightings, as impersonators gather at the Rockton venue for a combined competition featuring tribute artists of the King of Rock 'n' Roll as well as an array of classic vehicles.

The event, hosted by a non-profit organization called Kings and Classics, is being spearheaded by Carlisle area resident Maurice Corsi and Oldies 1150 radio personality Ray Michaels.

"Nobody has ever done a classic car show and Elvis competition together," Corsi told the Review. The longtime car buff and head of the Back Alley Cruisers Club in Mississauga is hoping the show will prove popular enough to become an annual event.

As of June 30, 15 tribute artists and 185 vehicles had been pre-registered. Additional performers are being encouraged to sign up and Corsi anticipates as many as 500 to 600 vehicles, including hot rods, trucks, street machines and muscle cars, will be featured.

Making a special appearance at the show will be Guelph resident Jay Zanier, winner of last year's championship at the Collingwood Elvis Festival and fourth-ranked Elvis tribute artist in the world. Zanier will perform around 5 p.m., with background music provided by Gerie and the Koasters.

Corsi said both the Elvis and the classic vehicle competitions will be professionally judged, with large cash prizes going to the winners.

Tribute artists will compete in three categories: professional, non-professional and youth, carrying cash prizes for the winners of $1,000, $500 and $250 respectively. Cash prizes of equal value will go to the first, second and third place winners of the classic vehicle competition.

There will also be a $250 prize awarded to the most-represented car club.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with adult admission set at $7 and seniors and children under the age of 12 admitted for $3. The rain date is Sunday, July 13.

The show will benefit a number of charities, including the Canadian Cancer Society, Hamilton Autism and the Peel Collaborative for Sexually Abused Children.
