Little Alina Buchanan is sporting a new ‘do.
Earlier this month, the four-year-old Beverly Central School student made her first trip to the hair salon, where she generously donated her pretty blond locks to A Children’s Voice Foundation’s Angel Hair for Kids program.
The not-for-profit organization’s initiative collects hair to make wigs and hair systems for children who have lost their hair as a result of a medical condition or medical treatments for various illnesses, including cancer. The wigs are offered to children and their families at no cost.
Upon arrival at Mill Street Hair Design in Waterdown, Alina and her supportive clan, including mom Julie, dad Dave and little sister, Evelyn, were greeted by stylist Tina Docherty.
Donning a pretty pink and black checkered dress and glittery sneakers, the young girl described her usual hair style as “really long” and was excited to undergo her first-ever haircut and donate three 10-inch braids to Angel Hair for Kids.
Asked who would receive her hair, Alina replied, “Little boys and little girls, because they don’t have any hair because the medicine makes their hair go away.
“They are going to take my hair and make a wig.”
The Buchanans, residents of West Flamborough, were talking about getting Alina’s hair trimmed when someone suggested the young girl donate her hair.
“I talked to Alina about it and I explained that there were sick kids who don’t even have any hair and maybe we should look at giving her hair as a donation,” said Julie. “She thought that was a fantastic idea.”
It wasn’t until Julie showed her daughter a photo of a potential new ‘do that Alina became eager to visit the Waterdown salon.
The pretty hairstyle, which wraps around the four-year-old’s face, allows the Beverly Central School student to don pretty hairbands and barrettes – all pink, of course.
Excited to show off her new look, Alina was equally pleased to hear that she received an A+ from her hairstylist, who commented that she sat stiller than some adults – including her dad – a client at the Mill Street salon.
“But don’t tell Daddy,” whispered Tina to a delighted Alina.
