The Zellers store at the Flamborough Power Centre will close September 15 in preparation for its conversion into a Target store, with the new store opening next March or April.
Store manager Carl Hipkiss confirmed the closure date this week. When asked about the disposition of staff resulting from the change, he said, “There is an encouragement for staff to apply at Target.”
Last week, Target Canada announced the opening lineup of its first 125 stores in Canada and the Clapisson’s Corners site was among five new Hamilton stores that will open next year. A Target store will open in Centre Mall on Barton Street about the same time as the Clappison’s Corners outlet, while additional stores will open next summer at Ancaster Meadowlands, Stoney Creek’s Queenston Place, and South Hamilton Square. No specific dates have been identified for the openings.
There will also be two Target stories opening in Burlington next spring, one at the Millcroft Centre and the other at Burlington Mall.
The U.S.-based discount retailer entered the Canadian marketplace by buying the leases to 220 Zellers stores from HBC for $1.82 billion in January 2011. The company plans to spend $10 million on remodeling each store and will employ about 200 people in each location. Each site will be closed for six to nine months to allow for renovations and recruitment of staff has already begun.
Announcements of further store openings for 2014 will be made this fall.
