Hamilton gangs and weapons unit officer charged

Flamborough Review

Two veteran Hamilton police officers have been suspended and face criminal charges following a five-month investigation into alleged misconduct in the gangs and weapons enforcement unit.

Police spokesperson Catherine Martin said the probe arose during a criminal investigation in June and alleges that information was falsified on an application for a search warrant.

Det. Const. Robert Hanson, 38, is charged with fabricating evidence and perjury. He has been with the service for 12 years.

Martin said the “extensive investigation” also found that another officer allegedly disclosed confidential information to an unauthorized person.

Det. Const. Craig Ruthowsky, 38, is charged with breach of trust and obstruction of justice. He has been with the service for 14 years.

Both have been suspended with pay since June and are scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 20. Hanson earned about $117,000 last year and Ruthowsky $112,000, according to the province’s public sector salary disclosure list.

Martin said police will make no further comment as the matter is now before the courts.
