Waterdown student survey will help promote positive development

Flamborough Review

By Dianne Cornish • REVIEW STAFF

Two weeks ago, about 300 Waterdown District High School (WDHS) students completed the Attitudes & Profiles of Student Life survey, which will help provide Healthy Community–Healthy Youth Flamborough with a snapshot of youth in East Flamborough.

Results of the survey, which will be released in early 2013, will indicate the level of developmental assets held by community youth. Developmental assets are 40 personal qualities, experiences and values that help young people make positive choices and avoid engaging in high-risk behaviours. The assets were identified by the Search Institute, a Minnesota-based, non-profit organization that provides leadership, knowledge and resources to promote healthy youth and communities.

Penny Deathe, community development/youth coordinator with HC-HY Flamborough, said consent forms for participation in the survey went home with about 600 students; the high school’s remaining 600 students will be invited to participate in the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board’s (HWDSB’s) Safe and Caring School Survey next spring.

The 50 per cent return rate for the survey is above normal for high school students, Deathe said, crediting the high return to “the incredible support of our teachers and to the Watermark Restaurant, which donated a free lunch to the first class to return all their consent forms.” The Flamborough Family YMCA in Waterdown also donated prizes to encourage participation.

Over the next few weeks, Grades 7 and 8 students in East Flamborough’s public schools will also complete the survey. All of the surveys will be sent to the Search Institute that will generate a report for the HC-HY group.

Deathe, a Waterdown resident, lauded WDHS teachers and staff for their support and flexibility while plans were made to roll out the survey.
