Side streets wait as arterial roads cleared

Flamborough Review

By Dianne Cornish, REVIEW STAFF

If you live on a side street in Waterdown, chances are you didn’t see your road cleared of snow today (Wednesday) until late afternoon as private contractors and city crews made the rounds while battling unrelenting snowfall.

For the most part, side streets are left to private contractors, not city work crews, said Darrell Smith, Hamilton’s manager of roads and maintenance. “It is a very hard and slow plow,” he said, adding that the snow is both “wet and heavy.”

“It’s taking double the time to do the routes,’” he explained, while also assuring that all residential streets will be done as soon as possible. “We’ll be working right through, working until we get it done.”

That was small consolation for residents on side streets off Victoria Street in Waterdown, such as Nelson, Reglan, Elgin and Wellington, who waited until almost 4 p.m. Wednesday before seeing a snowplow.

One resident was upset to see that the Memorial Park parking lot was cleared in the early afternoon, before her street was plowed. But Smith explained that the city’s parks department has a different set of contractors. No matter where the plowing was done, “it was slow and arduous,” he said.

Ward 15 Councillor Judi Partridge, who lives in Carlisle, said it took her about three hours to dig out this morning. There was so much snow that it bent evergreens over and caused some tree limbs to snap.

Partridge and her executive assistant Alison Morrison estimated that their office fielded about 15 complaints via email or phone about snow removal in Waterdown and the immediate area.

Morrison explained that city crews tackle arterial roads first as they are the major connector routes. After that, they prioritize secondary roads.

“I know there’s frustration out there,” she said, but snowfall was steady during the day and crews were doing their best to keep up, she added.
