In the second half of a home field double header last Wednesday night, the Sr. Warriors football team played a thriller against Delta. The game came close in overtime, but the Raiders managed to snag the win at 17-15.
The Warriors showed continuous gain of the field as they moved swiftly toward the Delta end zone.
By the end of the first quarter, no points were scored, but Cal Vola managed to run the ball up the field at the end of the quarter. Two minutes into the second quarter, Warrior Chris Gough scored a touchdown, leading the game 7-0.
Delta managed to keep possession of the ball in the Warriors' end zone. After some deliberation, WDHS decided to give up their safety, giving Delta two points, but moving the ball to the 35-yard line in Delta's end zone.
On the next possession, Vola again took the ball, and ran for 35 yards at the end of the second quarter, bringing the Warriors closer to a touchdown.
In the beginning of the second half, Dan Gough scored a touchdown, bringing the score to 14-2.
Two minutes into the fourth quarter, Delta scored a touchdown, however, WDHS managed to block the convert.
Eric Webb sustained a twisted kneecap in the fourth quarter, and was taken off the field.
Delta scored another touchdown with five minutes left in the game. The Warriors blocked the convert point yet again, but the game remained tied and ran into overtime.
The Warriors took possession of the ball first in overtime, but the Raiders managed to block them. Delta took the turnover on possession, but the Warriors held their defence and stopped the Raiders.
WDHS took possession of the ball for a second time and Bennett Doucette plowed his way through the Raiders, moving the ball closer to the end zone. Unfortunately, Delta again managed to block WDHS.
Waterdown kept the Raiders out of the end zone on Delta's next possession. On the Warriors' third possession, Paul Bousfield kicked the ball through the end zone to score a single.
Delta took possession of the ball once again, and moved forward. On their third down, Delta kicked the ball through the end zone, scoring three points, ending the game at 17-15.
The Warriors were slated to play Glendale this week at Ivor Wynne.
"We have to be optimistic," said coach Chuck Taylor of the team's next game. "Glendale is always tough, and we have a couple of injuries."
The next home game is slated for Thursday, October 25.
In junior action, the Warriors faced off against MacNab last Wednesday, opening the football double header at WDHS with an action-packed game. They defeated the visitors, 25-19 in overtime.
The Jr. Warriors' offensive tactics were demonstrated right away as Tyler Adamson scored a touchdown in the first quarter. MacNab, however, wasn't prepared to let the Warriors crush them too soon and answered the Waterdown touchdown with one of its own.
In the second quarter, MacNab scored again, with five minutes and 53 seconds remaining. Warrior quarterback, Jordan Chin managed to move the ball up 30 yards while running back Aaron Clarke went in for the touchdown.
With less than one minute remaining in the first half, Davis Winch intercepted the ball granting the Warriors possession.
Soon into the third quarter, Adamson plowed through MacNab's players for 15 yards.
In the fourth quarter, Clarke scored another touchdown for the Warriors, putting the score at 19-13. Winch again intercepted the ball during the fourth quarter soon after being tackled to the ground by MacNab.
The Jr. Warriors' defence was solid at the end of the fourth quarter as they continuously kept MacNab out of their end zone.
With one second left on the clock, MacNab scored a touchdown. However, the Waterdown defence blocked the convert, leaving the game tied 19-19.
The Warriors took possession of the ball first in overtime and quickly moved toward MacNab's end zone. Clarke scored the touchdown but MacNab managed to block the convert.
On MacNab's possession, Winch took the MacNab side to the ground leaving the game at 25-19 for the Warriors.
The Jr. Warriors were slated to play against Orchard Park this week.
