Turkey season runs until May 31

Well, as the saying goes, it's nice to get way but it's always nicer to come home. We spent the winter at Fort Myers, Florida and enjoyed it.

My friend from Saskatchewan and I tried the saltwater fishing a few times but had very poor luck. He is an excellent fisherman and seldom gets skunked, but this past winter, he did a couple of times. Thanks to him, though, we did enjoy a few fish dinners.

Many thanks to Al Ficzere for writing a few columns in my absence; Al is still working and had limited time to do any writing.

The winter league trapshoots are over for this year, but Brad Treanor is proposing that we organize a summer league. No decision has been made on his proposal at this time.

The Silver Horseshoe League wound up its season at the Galt Club on April 13 but so far I have no results of the class shoot held that day. As far as I know, the Galt Club won the league; I'll let you know the rest of the standings - including where Waterdown finished - when I receive them.

There will be open trapshooting on Sunday and Wednesday mornings from now on and everyone is welcome.

Flamborough residents who have open country in their backyards may see people in camouflage clothes passing through. Don't be alarmed, they are just turkey hunters. The open season for turkey hunting runs until May 31. Many sightings of turkeys have been reported.

Trout fishing opened last Saturday in the streams and ponds locally. Salmon and rainbow trout seasons are open year round in the Great Lakes and Georgian Bay waters. Some fishermen I know were up at Meaford and other popular spots a couple of weeks ago and only saw a few small rainbows.

The locals at Meaford alleged the Aboriginal fishermen had their nets stretched across the openings to the harbors and the spawning rivers last fall and were in no hurry to remove them when ordered by Ministry of Natural Resources.

The walleye season will get under way this Saturday in Zone 20.

The limit for walleye is four per day with a sport license and two with a conservation license. One fish may not be greater than 63 cm (24.8 inches).

The perch should be running now at Orillia and the derby is on.

Until next time, good luck either fishing or hunting.
