The falls at Spencer Gorge...

HCA urges caution near creeks, streams, waterfalls
News
Aug 15, 2008
There is a bright spot to all the wet weather the Hamilton area has received lately: with the increased flow, area waterfalls have never looked so spectacular in the summer months. And the greenery surrounding most waterfalls and cascades is lush and green, creating some beautiful scenery and perfect photography opportunities.

Hamilton's unique geography along the Niagara Escarpment contains more than 100 waterfalls within the city limits. The larger and more popular falls (Albion, Felker's, Sherman, Tiffany, Borer's, Buttermilk, Webster's, Tews and Great Falls) can be seen year-round with moderate flows, even in dry summers such as Hamilton has experienced in the last few years. This summer's rainfall has created roaring flows over the larger falls, giving visitors a chance to see the falls at a flow level usually only seen in early spring.

This summer's heavy rainfall also creates a unique opportunity to see many smaller waterfalls that would normally be dry at this time of year. While planning a trip to visit some Hamilton waterfalls, Spencer Gorge/Webster's Falls Conservation Area is a good place to start. The area offers two of Hamilton's most spectacular waterfalls, Webster's Falls, a magnificent tiered waterfall and Tews Falls, which at a towering 41 metres is only a few metres shorter than Niagara Falls.

But Hamilton Conservation Authority urges caution near creeks, streams, escarpment brows, and waterfalls during storm events.

Localized flooding may be a concern during severe thunderstorms. Adults are advised to keep children and pets away from watercourses as fast moving water and rapidly changing stream conditions pose a significant hazard.

The HCA issues flooding bulletins to advise watershed residents of an impending or occurring high water condition. To check if there has been a flooding bulletin issued by HCA, visit www.conservationhamilton.ca.
