After a decade of service in the community, FGHA president, John Stanisz, noted that individuals are still unaware of the girls' hockey club. So, the Flamborough Falcons, dressed in their new black and gold jerseys, hope their attire and name will help distinguish the association from the Flamborough Hockey Association's teams, the Sabres.
"We want the name (the Falcons) to be synonymous with girls' hockey" in Flamborough, said Stanisz.
Originally, the girls' association was under the boys' hockey umbrella. A decade ago, the executive decided it would be better to part ways from the FHA. Since then, the girls' hockey association has flourished, explained Stanisz.
"We have been independent ever since and done very well. We run a very successful hockey school for our girls, we do a one-day Christmas tournament and we are very financially stable," added the FGHA member of the executive.
When the decision was made to better represent girls' hockey in Flamborough, the FGHA ran a contest. Players and parents were asked to submit names, logos and colours that would best represent the association. All the submissions were posted on the group's website. Executive members narrowed the selection down to the top three names, logos and colours and asked the community to vote for their top choice again.
Based on the majority of the votes, the region's female hockey players will leave their blue and yellow jerseys behind and pick up their brand new black and gold jerseys at the start of the season next month.
As the community grows, explained Stanisz, so does the club's membership. With more registrants in tyke division, the association is beginning to become bottom heavy.
Fall registration for the Flamborough Girls' Hockey Association will take place in early September. Information is available on the club's website, www.fgha.ca. No concrete plans have yet been set to celebrate the group's 10-year anniversary, but Stanisz expects that festivities of some sort will be held for the players and their families to commemorate the milestone.
