The victory was especially sweet for Canada after last year's loss of the bronze medal to the Russians at the tourney. Canada finished this year's competition with four consecutive wins and handed Russia its only loss in the event.
Canada has now won four of the last five championships, and eleven of the last thirteen.
The Hlinka tournament is considered one the strongest showcases of hockey's best young talent.
Ellis and Windsor Spitfire teammate, Taylor Hall, who also netted a marker in the gold-medal game, were assistant captains of the Canadian squad. Both were members of the Canadian under-18 team that won the world championship this past spring.
During the recent tourney, Canada played in a round-robin pool with teams from Slovakia, Switzerland and Sweden, the 2007 defending champions. Russia played against teams from the Czech Republic, Finland and the United States.
Canada secured a spot in the gold-medal game by handily defeating Slovakia, 9-1, last Thursday. Ellis picked up four assists in the match.
In earlier action, Canada beat Switzerland, 5-3 and edged Sweden, 4-3.
