Students at Waterdown District High School remember their classmate Christopher Skinner, a talented musician, following his death in 2010.

Coroner to investigate teen’s death

Ontario’s deputy chief coroner for inquests is set to investigate the circumstances surrounding Christopher Skinner’s death.

Skinner was a 17-year-old Waterdown District High School student just shy of attending his graduation when he died in June 2010 of acute ethanol poisoning.

Skinner, a talented musician, was a dedicated student who was set to move on to study math and physics at the University of Toronto.

“He excelled at everything he did. It’s one of those lives that had such potential. Everything he touched turned to gold,” David Fisher, Skinner’s maternal uncle told the Review at the time.

On Tuesday, less than two years since the Skinner family, including mom Michelle, dad, Brian, and sister Katelyn, mourned the loss of their beloved son and brother, Ontario’s deputy chief coroner of inquests, Dr. Bert Lauwers, announced that an inquest will be held into Skinner’s death.

The inquest, according to a media release, will look into the events surrounding his passing. A five-person jury could make recommendations that may prevent similar deaths.

The inquest, set to begin at 9 a.m. on February 13 at the John Sopinka Court House in Hamilton, is expected to last up to two weeks. The court will hear from approximately 30 witnesses.
