Hamilton police offers holiday shopping safety tips

With holiday shopping gearing up, the Hamilton Police Service is offering shoppers a few safety tips.

While parking your vehicle, residents should be aware of their surroundings during daylight hours. At night, motorists should park in a well-lit area and be alert while attending their vehicle.

Shoppers should always lock their purchases and gifts out of sight – preferably in their vehicle’s trunk. Vehicle doors should remain locked and windows closed.

Residents should avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Instead, shoppers should opt to purchase items with a cheque, credit  or debit card when possible. And when using their payment card of choice, shoppers should always protects their personal identification number (PIN).

Shoppers should also consolidate their packages to avoid making several trips to their vehicle to secure merchandise, as unscrupulous people may be watching them.

To discourage purse-snatchers, shoppers should wear their purse across their body. Wallets should be kept in an inside jacket pocket, instead of a back trouser pocket.

Local shoppers should instruct children to turn to a store clerk or mall security guard and ask for help should they become separated from their parents or guardian. Children should never enter a parking lot alone.
