Nothing is more spectacular than a nighttime parade – and what a way to kick-start the Christmas season.
The Flamborough Santa Claus Parade Committee has been busy getting everything in order for the big day, Saturday, Nov. 24 at 6:30 p.m. Permits have been submitted, road closures arranged, many meetings with the City have been held – all to make way for the jolly old man from the North Pole.
All this hard work is all achieved by 10 core volunteers, who meet regularly to make this incredible event happen.
Enjoy a good morning and a great breakfast at Knox Presbyterian Church before preparing for the parade. All proceeds from breakfast on Nov. 24 will boost the parade.
Then, it’s off to Joe Sams Park, where on this particular morning, the park will be a bustle of activity after 9:30 a.m. Entrants arrive early to build and create their float that will contend to be named the most spectacular. Six o’clock comes quickly as floats must be ready to pull out of the park for a 6:30 p.m. parade start.
This year’s parade theme is, “Twinkle, twinkle, Christmas star,” chosen by our four-judge panel. With pen in hand, they are ready to nominate the best of the best entries.
Registrants for this year’s event have been coming in fast and furious. So far, there are 55 entries and 16 bands lined up for your enjoyment. And what would a parade be without horses? Their clippity-clop along the route is a sure sign that Santa is on his way.
Tigger will be out before the parade starts, getting everyone pumped and ready for a fun evening. When you see Tigger, know that the Loonie Bins are on their way. The parade costs approximately $35,000 to put on, all of which must be raised by the parade committee. While the City of Hamilton does provide us with some monetary assistance, the financial gap must be closed through corporate sponsorship and fundraising activities such as the Loonie Bins. So please, do not forget your loonies as this will give us a kick-start on offsetting some of the costs of next year’s parade, including the largest expense – the bands.
While many people think the bands participate in the parade for free, this year’s cost for bands will be approximately $15,000. However, what would a parade be without bands and the Christmas music they play?
As is our tradition, the Flamborough Santa Claus Parade Committee will be partnering with Helping Hands Street Mission and Boonstra’s One-Hour Heating & Air Conditioning. Don’t forget to bring your new or used socks and gently worn coats to donate to those in need.
Lafarge will be on site with a booth in the Turkstra parking lot, accepting donations of food for various food banks. Please plan to support these worthwhile causes.
The parade committee will donate all proceeds from non-profit group entries and fees for vehicles supplied to a charitable organization within the community. Last year, the committee donated $1,400 to several deserving causes.
Our elves will be walking the parade route collecting Letters to Santa, as well as the colouring contest sheets.
