Listen, Laugh, Inspire: A new year

Shauna Deathe, Healthy Community-Healthy Youth Flamborough

Happy New Year from all of us at HC-HY!

Another day gone by, another year is behind us. As 2013 arrives, so, too, does the annual custom of setting New Year’s resolutions that, let’s be honest, people rarely keep.

With so much focus on the future, accompanied by all its worries and fears, I think that we forget about the past, and that we may already be well equipped for what is to come.

I’d like to quote Maroon 5, which says in its song Pay Phone “You turned your back on tomorrow, ‘cause you forgot yesterday.”

I think there is a lot more relevance to this line than we notice at first listen.

With so much stress on the future and what we’re going to do, we, as teens, forget about the past and what we’ve already done. We seem to overlook that many of the skills we require to do well later in life, we’ve already developed.

It’s not about putting the past behind us, it’s about taking the lessons we’ve learned with us. The things we’ve achieved, the mistakes we’ve made, and even the times when nothing seemed to happen at all, all of these are stepping stones towards a brighter future, if we just let them be.

That’s why I think we, especially in our teen years, need to be open to trying new things, making new mistakes, stumbling a few times, because, as long as we’ve gained something from it, whether it’s experience or knowledge, it isn’t really a loss.

Inspire

Asset no. 40: Positive view of personal future. Young person is optimistic about her or his personal future.

Monthly challenge: have your teen/child set a goal for themselves this year.

• Encourage them to try a new sport or join a new team.

• Discuss a career they are interested in and find someone for them to talk to who is in that career.

• Check out all the course options for their next grade and encourage them to challenge themselves.

• Work with them on setting goals at school.

• Travel to a new place with them, either local or abroad.
