Cst. John Rusnak, Hamilton Police Service
Hello Flamborough.
Well, January is coming to a close and we are still experiencing balmy weather. It has perhaps instilled a bit of over-confidence in some drivers. Just a little bit of snow last week created chaos on the roads in the area.
Please slow down and drive according to the conditions. An old saying, “Drive to arrive alive” still rings true.
Reading through the reports for the week, it was obvious that the Carlisle area was the target for vehicle and house entries.
On one night, five vehicle entries occurred in the same neighbourhood. Only two of those vehicles had been left unlocked. Windows in the other three vehicles were smashed and there was damage to the door locks. In addition, two houses were entered, both through unlocked doors. Wallets, tools and electrical gadgets were taken.
I cannot stress enough the importance of securing not only your vehicle but also your house. Thieves are brazen enough to enter your house through an open door – even when you are home.
Yesterday, I received a call from Brian, who wanted me to ask residents to be more vigilant when it comes to the goings-on in their neighbourhoods. If you are suspicious of any activity in your area, please contact police. Constant vehicle and/or human traffic at all times of the day or night at a residence could indicate drug activity. Vehicles driving slowly through your neighbourhood late at night or during the day when people are at work could indicate a risk of house entries. Unfamiliar cars parked for a lengthy period of time on a street with occupants should raise a red flag.
There are several avenues available to you if you want to contact us. If it is an emergency, call 911. If you require a police response to a non-urgent situation, call 905-546-4925 – press 2 on the first prompt, then 3 on the second prompt to be connected with our communications section.
Sgt. Myra James, Flamborough’s crime manager can be reached at 905-540-5142 or mjames@hamiltonpolice.on.ca.
Thank you and have a safe week.
