Police Beat: Snow presents driving challenges

Cst. John Rusnak, Hamilton Police Service

Hello Flamborough, have you had enough of winter yet?

With Monday’s snowfall making for an exciting drive home, it was encouraging to see that the number of collisions was considerably lower from the last snow we had.

Also, for the very first time this season, I observed snowmobile tracks along the side of Hwy. 5. Please remember to use your machines only where permitted and remember to stay clear of private property and farm fields.

Reports indicate that vehicles are still being stolen from the Flamboro Slots parking lot. Vehicles targeted are high-end GM products including Cadillac Escalades and GMC Yukons.

The results of the 2011 Christmas R.I.D.E. program are below;  2010 numbers are in brackets.

Vehicle Stops – 40,264 (16,323)

Demands made – 90 (54)

Pass – 76 (47)

Warn – 13 (7)

Fail – 1 (0)

These stops resulted in four Criminal Code charges and 13 alcohol warn suspensions.

During 2011, 167,766 vehicles were stopped in R.I.D.E. lanes in Hamilton.

During these stops, 445 roadside demands were made resulting in 378 passes, 46 warns, 19 fails. These stops resulted in 51 Criminal Code charges and 46 alcohol warn suspensions.

Have a great week.

Drive safely.
