Y’s Choices: Diversify your workout

Pamela Dunk, Flamborough Family YMCA

Have you hit a plateau in your fitness regime?

From time to time, our bodies reach a point at which they need an extra nudge to take it to the next level. This point is different for each individual, and depends on frequency, time, type and intensity of exercise.

If you stop seeing changes in your endurance, the amount you can lift, or you are mentally bored with your current routine – chances are, you have hit a plateau.

There are many ways to overcome that plateau. One way is to change the type of exercise that you do by trying something new. Take a look at the recreational choices in your community and jump in.

In addition to diversifying your workout, this could also be a great way to meet new people.

Another option is to up the intensity of part of your workout, either by super-setting, decreasing rest between sets, choosing a higher level on the elliptical or doing more repetitions per set.

More options open up when you increase the frequency of your workouts.

If you are currently exercising three times weekly, attempt to add another session for a while. It does not have to be lengthy; even a half-hour of strength training will up your caloric expenditure and rev up your metabolic rate for hours.

Varying the order in which you do your exercises in a session or even the day of the week when you do them, as well as when you do your cardio, will challenge your system in a different way and aid you in busting through that plateau.

Reaching a plateau is a completely normal result of consistent physical activity.

Our bodies are amazing machines and will adapt to the demands we make on them. They just need to be challenged in a new and interesting way, periodically.

If you need assistance with any of the ways to alter your personal workout program, it is always best to consult a professional.

Enjoy your new adventure!
