Pump tests shouldn’t proceed

Dear Editor,

Re: MOE rejects quarry pump test results Review, November 7, 2008.

Don’t worry, everything is fine.

We are getting sick and tired of John Moroz, VP of Aggregates at St. Marys telling us that. Thank God the communities surrounding this potential mine have provided the talent and financial resources to hire our own experts. Otherwise, Phase Two Testing would likely be underway.

The sad news is that this should not even be happening at all.

A few years ago, prior to this quarry application, which was initiated by David Lowndes in 2004, this farmland and the aquifer beneath it were clearly identified as part of the two-year Time of Travel Wellhead Protection zone for the municipal drinking water wells in Carlisle.

These studies were undertaken by the Ministry of the Environment (MOE) and the City of Hamilton, to assess the water supply for the rural settlement of Carlisle.

Reports

The MOE’s Technical Expert Committee on Source Protection in a 2004 report recommended that there be no new quarries located within the 5 year Time of Travel zone in any Municipal Wellhead Protection zone.

The public release of the Annex Implementing Agreement on Great Lakes Waters in Milwaukee, WI on December 13, 2005 is documented in the book, The Great Lakes Water Wars by Peter Annin. All groundwater resources within the Great Lakes Basin fall under the agreement.

Our Premier Dalton McGuinty, present that day, is quoted from his statement to the press: “If we don’t protect this water, we’re going to compromise our quality of life, and we’re going to compromise our ability to generate prosperity. That’s what it’s all about……It’s [up to] the forty-three million people saying, ‘This is important to us, we want it done, and we won’t suffer any opposition.’”

We are in complete agreement with the Premier and we want it done! It is time for the McGuinty government to walk the talk and stop a development that no reasonable person would ever approve.
