The Waterdown Rookieball Select Wolves played hard to earn second in their division at the recent Lloyd Connie Memorial Select Rookieball tournament in Etobicoke (July 12-13). Sixteen teams from across Ontario participated in the two-day event; the Wolves were seeded into the Bobby Smyth Division with two other select teams and one rep team.

The Wolves played their first game on Saturday morning, against the Brampton Red Sox. They shut the Red Sox down in the top of the seventh for a final score of 10-6 for Waterdown.

Between their first and second games on Saturday, each member of the Wolves participated in either the hit, run or throw competition. All players represented Waterdown well.

The Wolves took an early lead in their second game of the day, against the North York Blues, scoring two runs in the first inning. Waterdown held the lead until the bottom of the second, when the Blues put four runs on the scoreboard. The Wolves rallied back in the top of the third inning by scoring two more runs to tie the game. The game ended due to curfew with the score tied at 11 runs each.

On Sunday, the Wolves played their third game of the tournament, against the Royal York Rep Cardinals.

The Cardinals came into the game having defeated each of their previous opponents by mercy ruling, but the Wolves struck early, putting the first run on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning.

Everyone on the Wolves team put the ball into play, with the Cardinal defense making some exceptional plays to keep them off the base path. In the end, the Cardinals won the game by a score of 9 to 1. An excellent effort was put forth by the Wolves to be the only team on the pod that went the distance with the Cardinals.

At the end of the round robin, the Wolves finished with three points, which landed them in second place for the division. Coaches Scott Parsons, Darren Gillis, Mark Cooper and David Doxey noted that they were amazed by the skilled level of play displayed by the Wolves. They were well matched and challenged during the tournament; even when behind in the scorebook, they gave their best while remaining good sports. The team represented Waterdown well.

Sponsored by Picard's Peanuts, Mark Cooper Sutton Group Results Realty and 1505 North Restaurant, the Wolves play this weekend (July 25-27) at the Ancaster Little League complex.
