Crusaders capture Catholic league volleyball title

Flamborough Review

The 2011-2012 season was an exciting one for the St. Mary Secondary School senior girls’ volleyball team.

Their 10-win, four-loss record left the Lady Crusaders in a tie for first place that was decided by a single point over Bishop Ryan to give the Crusaders top spot.

In quarter-final action, St. Mary defeated Cathedral in straight sets.

The semifinal match against Cardinal Newman went the five-game distance, with St. Mary advancing to the championship to face perennial rivals, Bishop Ryan.

The Crusaders defeated the second-ranked Celtics in a tightly contested match, winning the city championship, three sets to one.

The win was the 20th city Catholic league volleyball title for coach Jos Nederveen, and his fifth at St. Mary.

Special accolades go to two graduating students, middle Jenna Bugiardini and libero Olivia Bonomo, who have played a critical role in winning the first senior girls’ volleyball championship since 1998.

The team includes players Ashley Donnelly, Jenna Bugiardini, Christina Buttenham, Olivia Bonomo, Sarah Spagnoletti, Leah Feuerstake, of Waterdown, Victoria Oliveira, of Waterdown, Sarah Sloan, Joanne VanSanvoort, Brooke Lahaie of Waterdown and coach Jos Nederveen.
