The spring hunt is for gobblers only, and two can be taken if an additional tag is purchased. The fall hunt will be for one bird of either sex.
The fall season has been approved in Wildlife Management Units 64, 67, 68, 73, 76, 77, 78, 81, 82, 84, 90, 92, and 93.
The wild turkey was reintroduced to Ontario in 1984 and since then, its population has grown to approximately 70,000 birds.
The season will run from the Tuesday following Thanksgiving until the second Sunday following Thanksgiving. This year, that's October 14 to October 26. The sale of turkey hunting licenses last year brought in $936,789 to the Ministry of Natural Resources' Special Purpose account, which funds fish and wildlife programs.
The most important event of the year for trapshooters is the Canadian Trapshooting Championships. This was a four-day meet held at the Hamilton Gun Club from June 26-29. A number of Waterdown Rod & Gun Club members attended some of the events. Scores of 96 to 97 were common - but that is not enough to win in that class of competition. I understand one Waterdown shooter, Victor Tomlinson, won the high score for seniors. I'll have more to report on this in coming weeks. In the meantime, congratulations, Victor, on your success.
Attendance was down for trapshooting at Waterdown last Sunday, no doubt due to the championship shoot in Hamilton. There will be open trapshooting at the Waterdown club on Wednesday and Sunday mornings starting at 10 a.m. Visitors are welcome.
Now that bass season is open, I should be hearing some fishing stories worth reporting. We just returned from a week's vacation, so I'm a bit out of touch.
Hopefully, I'll have a successful fishing story of my own to tell - and that would be a first for this year!
