Warriors strong at tourney

Under mixed clouds and two glimmering rainbows, the second round of the Grisdale Triple Crown tournament was run at Flamboro Speedway last Saturday night.

The 50-lap main event presented by Lucas Oil Products attracted competition from across Ontario, but it was the weekly runners from Guelph and Waterdown that dominated the performance.

Westover's Scott Lyons No. 52 earned the Lucas-Grisdale pole award as the top qualifier of the day, but a roll of the dice in front of the grandstand determined a nine car inversion, dropping the multi-time champ Lyons back to a ninth starting spot.

The early laps were led by visiting driver Rob MacDonnell of Allenford, whose black No. 72 looked very strong as he attempted to win the event for the second consecutive year. However, mechanical problems that arose in the midst of a battle with No. 82 Jason Shaw forced the 'man in black' to retire to the pit area, and left the leadership responsibility to Flamboro's defending track champion.

Guelph's Jason Shaw was absolutely dominant and flawless in his performance on Saturday, as his Del Metals-National Fire Equipment No. 82 Ford Fusion muscled to the front using the treacherous high groove. Once out in front, Shaw's only remaining concern was the gold Pennzoil No. 37 of David Elliott. Elliott was able to catch Shaw on a couple occasions, but with no real opportunity to make a pass for the top spot.

The tournament point leader No. 8 Paul Howse had a strong day, climbing to fourth in the closing laps after starting the race in 17th position. The position had previously been held by Waterdown's Gary Elliott No. 36, but late caution flags for spinning cars broke the momentum of the veteran driver and gave Howse an opportunity to get a big jump on a restart.

Scott Lyons finished in sixth behind Elliott, after a long night battling over position with the No. 36 driver. Other locally-based entrants included No. 3 Chris Bochsler, Waterdown (9th); No. 75 TJ Marshall, Rockton (12th); and No. 86 Kenny Forth, Lynden (13th). All the hometown heroes in the 24-car field had strong finishes.

A strong finish was also had by Waterdown Napa Mini Stock driver Ron Larkin Jr of Flamborough whose Quaker State No. 2 bested the 30-car starting field to win his first main event of the 2008 season. He was followed across the line by the Napa No. 5 of Ken Stenhouse, also from Flamborough.
