U13 Select girls wrap up season, donate gear

It was a successful season both on and off the field for the Flamborough Flames U13 Select girls. In a building year that added six new players, the team fought its way to a fourth-place finish in the U14 division of the Hamilton Multi-Jurisdictional League, while off the field the girls forged new friendships with a hotel tournament and pool parties. The team also pitched in to collect several bags of previously worn jerseys and soccer equipment for the Lazarus Project in Zambia.

The girls began their training well before the grass was green during winter sessions at Guardian Angels’ school gym from January to March. Fitness training with the Runner’s Den followed in April and then they were on to the fields as soon as it was dry enough in May.

The team got off to a slow start with many of the initial games against the older U14 teams. However, the girls persevered with spirit and determination as their skills and teamwork improved. They finished the season with an exciting race against Brantford for the top U13 spot in the combined U13/U14 division.

The team also participated in three tournaments throughout the summer in Ancaster, St. Thomas, and Stratford.

The season is now over; however the team is holding open tryout practices this Friday (October 3) from 8- 9:30 p. m. and Sunday (October 5) from 2:30-4 p. m. at Joe Sams Leisure Park #1. Any girl born in 1995 who would like to find out more about the Select soccer program is invited to attend.

The 1995 Flames were sponsored this year by Lexsan Electrical, Movement Solutions Physiotherapy and Leger Marketing.
