The Waterdown District High School senior Warriors got off to a slow start in Thursday’s game against Saltfleet, but they finished big, winning 24-7 to bring their record to two wins and one loss in HWIAC Division 1 play going into this week’s outing against Sir Allan MacNab.

The Warriors got on the scoreboard early with a field goal from the 25-yard mark. Waterdown held the 3-0 lead until the end of the first half, when Saltfleet scored a major.

“We were losing 7-3 at halftime; the offence wasn’t moving the ball,” noted WDHS teacher Chuck Taylor, who is on the Warriors’ coaching staff. “Then came the half-time pep talk.”

The Warriors roared into the second half. Cal Vola scored a touchdown on the opening play of the third quarter and Eric Webb followed up with an interception that he ran in for a touchdown. The Warriors scored one more major on a 20-yard run in the fourth.

The dexterity of the players was reduced due to the afternoon rain, which also posed some challenges when it came to handling the slippery ball. The young team also has a few areas they need to work on, added Taylor.

“We had a couple of fumbles and a couple of untimely penalties, but we’ll work on those,” he said.

The win puts the Warriors in third place in Division 1, a position they share with the Ancaster Royals.

“We’re in the right spot for the playoffs. That’s what it’s all about this year,” said Taylor.

The Warriors are slated to host the second-place MacNab team this Wednesday, October 8 at 7 p.m.

The Junior Warriors are also slated to play at the Parkside Drive field this Wednesday at 5 p.m., against Orchard Park. This is the second outing for the juniors, who are competing as an exhibition team. They dropped their first game against Saltfleet, 23-1.
