The Flamborough Fire Major Atom boys rolled into Stoney Creek recently to participate in Newman Youth’s annual Battle of Stoney Creek tournament.

First up for the Fire was the host team, Newman Youth #2. The game was a low-scoring defensive struggle with both teams battling hard – particularly under the basket. In the end, the Fire edged the home team 27-18.

The Fire’s next opponent was Scarborough. At halftime, the score was nearly even but in the second half the height advantage of the Scarborough team proved too much to overcome and the Fire went down by a score of 47-26.

The next game, against the Welland Warriors, proved to be an extremely exciting and close game. The Fire led throughout and hung on for a thrilling 49-47 victory.

The gold medal game was a re-match against Scarborough, who came out flying and took a commanding 31-10 half-time lead. In the second half the Fire came alive and outscored their opponent 22-18.

Leaders

However, the effort came too late and they took home the silver medal.

Tournament leaders for Flamborough were Michael-Owen Evans Branagh with seven assists, Trey Gardner, who had 36 points and Caleb Feuerstake, who registered 43 rebounds.
Earlier in the season, the Fire earned tournament medals in Brantford (bronze) and Flamborough (silver).
