Poor weather doesn’t stop 55+ bowlers from striking big

Last Monday (Feb. 4) was one of those messy days weather wise. However, numerous brave souls found their way to Waterdown Lanes in the hopes of knocking down a few pins.

While there was a good turnout for the 55+ Bowling League’s weekly play, a few bowlers were absent, attending instead the funeral of Bob Hinton’s lady, Pan Stoker. That’s the kind of people we are; we take care of each other even when it means giving up something we enjoy doing.

Once again Carol Bleses had a fine time with a 266 score in one game, resulting in a 631 triple score.  Carolyn Janko came up with a 200 and BettyAnn Silver scored a 197.

Good going, ladies!

And what about the men?

Tom Johnson had a 192. I’d like a couple of games like that, too. Tom Dixon and Bill McGinley split the 50/50 draw this week. Every little bit helps!

The previous week, many bowlers were pleasantly surprised by their scoring abilities.

Susan McGinley got a 240 and Janko scored 200, catapulting their team to first place. Then, Silver scored a 197, while Bleses made 266 with a high triple of 631.

On the men’s side, only Bob McKerness scored 198 – another great score for the Turkey Bowlers, who are now on top.

While preparing the current membership list, I noticed that 17 of our bowlers will be 80 years old by the end of the season. We have five individuals on the spare list, two of whom are also octogenarians.

Who says retired people just play cards or watch television?

Due to unexpected illnesses and surgeries, we have room for a few more bowlers. If you are interested in having an afternoon where social activity, laughter and exercise are the key components, call 905-689-4782, or just drop by Mondays at 12:30 p.m.

While you’ll have fun bowling, our league offers a great opportunity to make some new friends.

The Waterdown Lanes is located in the Village Plaza on Hamilton Street North in Waterdown.
