Local players on the tyke 1 Flamborough Sabres’ team took top honours in the tyke AA division at last weekend’s Motown Cup tournament in Detroit, Michigan.
The Sabres, comprised of players between the ages of six and seven, went undefeated in tournament play, earning the championships title in their division.
The first game was a competitive and close match between the Sabres and Dearborn Belle Tire. But the Flamborough players came out on top, 4-3.
The second game, which was played at Joe Louis Arena, home of Detroit Red Wings, saw the Sabres shut out the Whitby Silver Sticks, 7-0.
Sunday’s match between the Sabres and Chicago Sabres was a tight battle. The Flamborough Sabres fought hard to tie up the score, 4-4.
The tie secured the Flamborough team’s spot in the finals, where players faced off against the Chicago Sabres again.
Coach Mike Peters and assistants Ron Clark and Curtis Frank had a motivated, talented and excited group that played a fantastic game and saw the score tied at 2-2 after regulation play.
The game went into overtime, when Alec Stewart, game’s MVP, scored the tournament winning goal, earning the tyke 1 Flamborough Sabres the Motown Cup.
Back from Detroit, the Flamborough squad is pumped to continue playing in its regular scheduled matches.
The team plays at Carlisle Arena every Thursday at 7 p.m. and would welcome community residents to stop in to watch them play.
