Cst. John Rusnak, Hamilton Police Service
The past week was relatively quiet in Flamborough. More vehicles were stolen from the Slots at Flamboro Downs parking lot; again GM products were the targets.
For several weeks, I have written about vehicle and home entries and the articles that are coveted by thieves. The acronym “CRAVED” describes why some items are more popular with thieves than others.
Concealable – Things that can be hidden in pockets or bags are more vulnerable to thieves. Things that are difficult to identify are also more at risk.
Removable – The fact that cars and bikes are mobile helps explain why they are so often stolen. Joy riders are more interested in a car’s ease of theft than its financial value. Laptop computers and GPS units are desirable – and easy to carry.
Available – Desirable objects that are widely available and easy to find are at a higher risk.
Valuable – Thieves will generally choose the more expensive goods, especially when they are stealing to sell.
Enjoyable – Hot products tend to be enjoyable things to own or consume, such as liquor, tobacco and DVDs. Burglars are more likely to take DVD players or TVs than microwave ovens.
Disposable – Thieves tend to select things that are easy to sell.
By recognizing “CRAVED” items you can prevent and reduce crimes that involve them.
Have a safe week.
