Grinning and giggling to support grandmothers

By Catherine O’Hara, REVIEW STAFF

Laughter is said to be good for the soul. Pair a few chuckles with a worthy cause and you’ve got yourself a ticket to the Grandmothers of Steel’s annual Giggles and Grins event.

The humour fest, benefitting the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, takes place on Saturday, February 4 at 1 p.m.

The three-hour event, organized by Adrienne Sloan and Sharron Orovan Johnston, who successfully ran the First Canadian Humour Conference before partnering with the Grandmothers of Steel, is expected to make the rafters ring with laughter.

“What they are doing is bringing together some of the best motivational speakers, who use laughter as a way of shifting your perspective,” said Grandmother of Steel member and Freelton resident, Lisbie Rae.

“It’s a way of shifting your perspective and finding humour in daily life.”

Giggles and Grins will also feature laughter yoga, games and a comedian, who will have guests laughing about the trials and tribulations of being a mom.

Held at Hamilton’s First Unitarian Church, 170 Dundurn St. South, the third annual Giggles and Grins aims to raise funds and awareness for African grandmothers left to care for their orphaned grandchildren as a result of the AIDS pandemic.

Displaying great courage and entrepreneurial skills, these devoted grannies have spearheaded grassroots projects in their communities. The Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign strives to fund these projects in an attempt to turn the tide of AIDS in Africa.

Tickets for Giggles and Grins cost $25 and are available by emailinggrandmothersofsteel@gmail.com or by calling Maureen at 905-385-8482 or Adrienne at 905-575-5329.
