The Waterdown-East Flamborough Heritage Society will welcomes Margaret Cooper at its next meeting. Cooper will share stories and recollections of her wartime career, the details of which have only recently been declassified. A pictorial display from her collection will also be presented.
Cooper, born in Uruguay to British parents, was working in Argentina when the Second World War was declared and, like many Britons and Anglo-Argentines, she volunteered for service.
She travelled three weeks by boat to join the Women’s Royal Naval Service, where she was selected to work at Bletchley Park. She was promoted to Officer in May 1944 and was appointed to the staff of the Chief of Staff Plymouth to act as liaison of the work in Bletchley Park for application in Operation Overlord.
In July 1945, she was demobilised, as was her husband, Craig Cooper, a Canadian radar officer. They returned to Canada and began raising a family in Flamborough.
Cooper recently received the Bletchley Commemorative Medal.
The public is welcome to hear Margaret Cooper’s story on Friday, Feb. 24 at St. James United Church, 306 Parkside Dr., Waterdown. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. The meeting starts at 8 p.m.
