As Valentine’s Day approaches, Global Pet Foods is asking Waterdown and area pet lovers to spread the love to homeless pets during the 7th annual Show Us Your Heart fundraiser.

From Feb. 2-16, residents can show their support for Animal Adoptions of Flamborough (AAF) by visiting Global Pet Foods at the Waterdown Shopping Centre, 255 Dundas St., and donating a loonie or more to the campaign. All proceeds will go to AAF’s shelter on Mill Street North, where hundreds of abused or abandoned pets are cared for every year.

The 2012 campaign was the most successful yet, netting over $1,500 compared to the previous year, which raised a little over $800. “We were showing pink last year with all the donations coming in,” said store manager Cindy Scott, who is hoping this year’s drive will do even better. Pink paper hearts bearing the names of donors to the campaign will be displayed in the store windows throughout the event.

AAF president Mary Lamb is grateful for all the support coming from local residents and the pet food store, which sponsors the campaign in conjunction with Hill’s Science Diet. “Every bit helps,” she said, adding that the money raised will be used to cover vet bills for the spaying and neutering of shelter pets.

Noting that the Waterdown pet store has been part of the campaign “from the start,” Scott said every dollar donated in-store will be matched by Global Pet Foods and Hill’s Science Diet. Donors can support the campaign by making a donation of a loonie or more by cash or credit card at the Waterdown store or by texting the word “HEART” from their mobile phones to 20222 to donate $5.

“We’re offering thank you gifts for every customer donating $5 or more,” Scott said. Also, for those who donate $5 or more in-store, Global Pet Foods and Hill’s Science Diet will give them 10 bonus Air Miles reward miles.

The Show Us Your Heart campaign is a good fundraiser, but the local store’s support of AAF doesn’t stop there, the manager explained. “We always accept donations on behalf of the shelter,” she said, and the store holds food and litter drives for AAF, as well. “It’s our small local shelter and we work exclusively with AAF,” she added.

Donations will be accepted during business hours, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Scott invites customers to “like us” on Facebook in order to keep abreast of upcoming events.

Since 2006, the Show Us Your Heart campaign has raised over $400,000 for local animal shelters.

A registered charity with a no kill policy, AAF is volunteer-run and completely funded by private donations and fundraisers. For more information about the organization, phone 905-689-4972 or visit www.anadoptflam.com.
