Don't miss the Waterdown BIA Tree Lighting Festival Nov. 17

The Waterdown Business Improvement Area is getting into the holiday spirit.

On Saturday, Nov. 17, the group is hosting its annual Tree Lighting Festival in the Sobey’s Plaza, where three large trees – located just west of the Husky gas station at Hamilton and Dundas streets – will be lit. Metallic trees installed in the planter boxes across the street in front of the old Waterdown high school will also be lit on Saturday evening.

In addition to witnessing the lighting ceremony, community residents are invited to take part in a range of activities leading up to the colourful unveiling.

From 3 until 6 p.m., families can enjoy free horse-drawn wagon rides around the Sobey’s Plaza thanks to Touch of the Past. At 4:15 p.m., entertainment will begin, starting with a magic show by Robert Presswood. Music, by the Community Church band and choir, Kid Vox, will follow.

Local dancers from Waterdown’s Dancemakerz studio are set to take to the stage to perform some of their latest routines at the annual BIA event.

Before the 6 p.m. tree lighting, Santa will make a special appearance and meet with children in attendance.

The event, which will feature free hot chocolate, cider and other goodies, is a fundraiser for City Kidz. This year, the Waterdown BIA aims to further boost the not-for-profit organization and encourages community residents to donate an unwrapped toy.

Some 75 toys were collected at last year’s event – a “really good turnout,” said the business group’s executive director, Wilf Arndt, who is hopeful the community will be just as generous this year.
