Welcome the New Year with 2013 Heritage calendar

Flamborough Review

By Catherine O’Hara

As we prepare to turn the page on 2012, members of the Waterdown-East Flamborough Heritage Society invite residents to welcome the New Year with its new and improved calendar.

Crafted by Waterdown resident, Kim Janjic, a local heritage society board member, the 2013 colour calendar blends old with new. It is based on the society’s John Street walking tour, which offers a healthy selection of history-rich properties, and features snapshots from years past and modern-day photos of the same locations. Imbedded within each page of the calendar are “really interesting anecdotes,” which Janjic hopes will entertain – and inform – community residents.

Also featured on the calendar are the Flamborough flag, the area’s Coat of Arms and information on the Waterdown-East Flamborough Heritage Society’s monthly meetings.

“I think there are a lot of new residents of Waterdown who would be really interested in our speakers, but they just don’t know we are there,” said Janjic of the guests, who deliver fascinating speeches at the not-for-profit organization’s meetings.

Only 250 calendars are up for grabs and proceeds from sales will go towards purchasing necessary shelving to house artifacts in the soon-to-be constructed, new Hamilton Public Library Waterdown Branch, which will be home to the Flamborough Archives.

The rolling shelves, installed on a rail system, however, are expected to cost $30,000. “That’s a lot of money,” said Janjic.

Since the Flamborough Heritage Society runs the Flamborough Archives, the society must come up with the funds. While it plans to apply for grants, the registered charitable organization is banking on selling its entire calendar stock to help offset the cost.

The 2013 heritage calendars, which retail for $15, are available for purchase in Waterdown at Weeks Home Hardware (71 Hamilton St. North), Connon Nurseries (383 Dundas St. East) and Mercantile & Tea (255 Dundas St. East).

Calendars can also be purchased on the Flamborough Heritage Society web site, www.wefhs.myhamilton.ca, where residents can also order and purchase a Flamborough flag.
