Snap to it: Strabane W.I. hosts photo contest

Flamborough Review

By Catherine O’Hara

Shutterbugs, get snapping.

The Strabane Women’s Institute is hosting its third photography contest and community residents of all ages are encouraged to submit their favourite print for a chance to win some neat prizes.

The contest was first started when members of the Strabane service club discovered that there was a growing interest in photography, locally.

Advances in technology, noted W.I. member Gladys McCullum, have made it easier and more affordable for amateur photographers to capture special moments digitally or on film. So when the group of ladies decided to host their 2011 instalment of the bi-annual contest, it came as no surprise to see that some 70 entries were received.

“We were quite pleased,” said McCullum of the large number of entries.

This year’s contest will follow the same format as in previous years. Shutterbugs can submit one, four-inch by six-inch colour or greyscale print for consideration in one of three categories, including nature (plants and animals), pictorial (people and landscapes) and events (current and community).

The contest is open to all Flamborough residents and entries will be divided by age group, adult and youth (ages 12 and under).

After the contest closes on March 13, photographer Don Corby, of Corby Custom Framing in Carlisle, will review the entries and determine the winners. The entries, noted Corby, will be judged based on how well the photograph was executed, how well it fits the category it is entered in and the image’s wow factor.

For those interested in entering the contest, Corby suggests they go out and take a photograph instead of searching through their albums for a photo that suits the criteria.

“Use your imagination and come up with a subject that would fit the category and then go out and do it,” he said. “Try and get a picture in your mind as to what you want to do and what you want to see and go do that, you’ll be more successful.”

One winner will be selected in each category and age group. A total of six prizes, which have yet to be determined, will be awarded.

“We had a lot of interest about it,” said McCullum, who is helping organize and promote the contest. “I hope it’s a success again.”

To enter the Strabane W.I.’s 2013 Photography Contest, contestants must fill out an entry form available at the Flamborough Review office, 30 Main St. North in Waterdown or at Corby Custom Framing, 26 Carlisle Rd., in Carlisle. The form must then be pasted to the back of each entry before photos are mailed to or dropped off at Corby Custom Framing (RR 1, 26 Carlisle Rd., Freelton, ON, L0R 1K0) by 5 p.m. on March 13.
