VT raises the curtain on The Underpants Feb. 15

Flamborough Review

By Kathy Yanchus

In a season devoted to comedies, Village Theatre opens the second show of its 40th anniversary year, Steve Martin’s The Underpants, February 15.

The 90-minute, “fast-paced” show – there is no intermission – is geared to a more mature crowd; it’s not for children, said producer Penny Oliver.

The Underpants is the story of “ambition, desire and the fleeting nature of fame” when a housewife becomes an overnight celebrity after she accidentally loses her underpants in public, much to the dismay of her conservative bureaucrat husband.

The cast, directed by Al French, features Scott Boxom, Andrea Adcock, Stacy Milford, Michael Anania, Adam Harrison and Peter Hawley.

Martin adapted his play from Carl Sternheim’s 1910 farce, Die Hose.

One of the challenges facing the group was finding authentic props and costumes, said Oliver.

Showtimes are at 8 p.m. Feb. 15 to 17, Feb. 22 to 24, March 1 and 2 with 2 p.m. matinées on Feb.17 and 24.

Tickets are $20 and $18 for students and seniors and are available in advance by phone, 905-690-7889, at Jitterbug Café, 35 Main St. N. and Pickwick Books, 325 Dundas St. E.

A limited number of tickets may be available the night of a performance. Village Theatre productions and box office are located inside Memorial Hall, 317 Dundas St. E.
