Dispose of unwanted electronics at Carlisle e-waste event

Carlisle United Church and the 1st Carlisle Cub Pack are making ridding your home of old electronics a breeze.

Starting on Friday, February 22, residents can easily dispose of their unwanted electronics anytime at the Carlisle church during the facility’s second annual e-waste event, which wraps up on Monday, March 4.

With the help of Greentec, a Cambridge-based recycling facility, families can safely dispose of televisions, cellphones, print cartridges, digital cameras, MP3 players, computers, speakers and more.

Considering that Ontarians generate more than 100,000 tones of electronic waste annually, and that most municipalities charge a fee to dispose of old electronic equipment, it’s no wonder that only 27 per cent of all items are properly discarded. The upcoming recycling program will help promote environmental friendliness by diverting electronic items from being dumped into landfill sites, as well as boost the Carlisle United Church and the 1st Carlisle Cub Pack, which teamed up to host this year’s event.

“It’s a fundraiser for both,” noted church volunteer Carolyn Tarrant.

In 2012, the Carlisle United Church held its inaugural e-waste recycling event and according to Tarrant, “it was extremely successful.” And this year, organizers are hoping it will be no different.

Individuals are welcome to drop by the church parking lot, located at 1432 Centre Rd., anytime between Feb. 22 and Mar. 4 to dispose of items in the large bin. But, before doing so, residents are reminded to clear any and all personal information from their devices, including computers, digital cameras and cellphones.

For a complete list of acceptable electronics, visit www.greentec.com. For more information on drop-off and pick-up options, email 1stcarlislepack@gmail.com or call the church at 905-689-8630.
