Enjoy the sweet taste of spring at Westfield

Flamborough Review

The trees are tapped, the sap is dripping and the fires are crackling at Westfield Heritage Village.

This month, families can enjoy the Sweet Taste of Spring Maple Syrup Festival at the Kirkwall Road site.

The event will feature access to the village’s nearly 40 heritage buildings, staffed by authentically costumed interpreters, as well as offer guests an opportunity to learn how maple syrup and sugar were produced for generations by Canada’s First Nations communities. Families can also find out how early 19th century pioneers used a series of iron cauldrons to produce large quantities of delicious syrup.

To satisfy guests’ sweet tooth, the modern sugar shack will feature samples of Westfield’s very own maple syrup. And in the Ironwood Hall, the St. George Lions Club will be selling  pancakes, with either ham or sausage.

The Maple Syrup Festival runs from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Sundays, March 10, 17, 24 and 31, as well as on Wednesday, Mar. 13 and Thursday, Mar. 14. The program will also run on Good Friday, Mar. 29.

Admission is $11 for adults; $10 for seniors and $6.50 for youth ages six to 12.

Westfield is located at 1049 Kirkwall Rd. in Rockton. Call 1-800-883-0104 or 519-621-8851 for more information.
