The passing of a local Canadian rugby icon will be marked Saturday when the Burlington Centaurs and Hamilton Hornets meet in three important games at Mohawk Sports Complex.
Monty Heald, former player and captain of the Hamilton Hornets (1968-1972) and founding member of the Burlington Centaurs in 1973, will be honoured with a minute of silence before each game.
Heald, who passed away this week at the age of 78, was one of only two lifetime members of Rugby Canada. He immigrated to Canada in 1968 and was still coaching his local high school team in Waterdown until last year. He served on the Niagara Rugby Union and was national team manager among a plethora of administrative duties at Rugby Canada.
Saturday’s three games could potentially decide who wins the Niagara Rugby Union Cup and advance to a higher tier.
The women’s kick off is at noon, the men’s second team takes the field at 1:30 p.m and men’s first team follows at 3 p.m. on Mohawk Sports Complex’s Field 1.
