Where in the world is Santa? NORAD and Google track his journey

News Dec 24, 2014 InsideToronto.com

Old Saint Nick has packed up his sleigh and tacked up his reindeer for his annual gift delivery and there are a couple of ways children and those young at heart can track Santa’s global journey.

Digital Santa trackers are counting down the days, hours and minutes until the big guy makes his appearance on Christmas Eve.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) – and its predecessor the Continental Air Defence Command (CONAD) – has been tracking Santa’s flight for 60 years. The tradition began in 1955 after a Colorado Springs Sears Roebuck & Co. advertisement misprinted a telephone number to reach Santa. Instead, the number put callers through to CONAD’s commander-in-chief’s operations ‘hotline.’

And so, not wanting to let the children down, Col. Harry Shoup had his staff check the radar for signs Santa was making his way south from his home in the North Pole.

Both the U.S. and Canadian governments picked up the tradition when they created the bi-national air defense command for North America, NORAD.

Meanwhile, Google Maps Santa Tracker showcases Santa’s dashboard, the technology that powers his sleigh, during his ‘round-the-globe journey. While Mr. Claus prepares for his trek, kids are invited to check out Santa’s village for games and activities.
