Robbery suspect nabbed at motel

The intersection at John Street West and Hamilton Street North was blocked off for nearly three hours last Friday (September 15) evening, as police searched for a man believed to have robbed the Waterdown Fortinos just after 5 p.m.

The suspect entered the store and demanded money from the clerk, while producing "what was believed to be a handgun," said HPS Staff Sergeant Peter McHarg.

After the man left the store, with an undisclosed amount of cash, it was believed he headed for the Hamilton Street property, an abandoned house that most recently has been used as a commercial site.

But even as the officers and canine unit searched the immediate area, a call came in to the HPS alerting officers that the suspect had been observed at the Waterdown Motel.

Officers were dispatched to the Dundas Street East motel, where they arrested a 40-year-old male of no fixed address. He was charged with one count of robbery and one count of using an imitation firearm while committing an offence.
