Raiders storm the courts in area tournaments

The Waterdown Raiders 14U volleyball team played against older 15U age division teams in their first 15U zone qualifying tournament recently. In pool play, the Raiders lost 2-0 to Milton Storm, 2-1 to Cambridge Hawks and 2-0 to the Waterloo Tigers.

In the quarterfinals, the Raiders lost 2-0 to the Niagara Rapids and defeated Milton Storm 2-1 for a top seven finish out of 12 teams.

The Raiders are coached by Mike Fuchs of Stoney Creek and Rodney Manual of Hamilton and the roster includes Kathryn Cant, Jessica Hodgson, Lyndsey Innes, Taylor-Anne Grills, Deandra Edwards, Michelle Kolich, Patricia Raso, Vaska Hamanova, Mira Krunic, Kaitlyn Tritchew, Maddie Sibiga and Megan Wickens.

UNDER 18

In the 18U division, the Raiders are affiliated with the Mountain Athletic Club. The 18U MAC team won the Bronze medal at the second 18U zoning tournament this past weekend. Finishing with a 4-2 record in the round robin, the MAC team defeated Niagara Rapids 2-0 games in the quarter finals but lost to DRVC 2-0 games in the semifinals. The MAC team defeated the Stratford Stingers 2-1 games to win the Bronze medal.

The 18U MAC team is coached by Al Starcevic and Simunic and the roster includes Larissa Puhach, Laura Bye, Alicia Garner, Adrianne Kolich, Katie McHugh, Sarah Kiernan, Janine Serratore, Katie Kalata, Margot Randall and Carley Hanna.

UNDER 16

The Waterdown Raiders 16U volleyball team captured their second medal of the season in 16U competition at the McGregor Cup Zone B Qualifying Tournament in Whitby. The Raiders went undefeated in pool play. In the quarter semifinals Oshawa's DRVC fell 2-0 and in the semifinals the Raiders defeated Crush 2-0. In the gold medal match, the Raiders defeated the Ottawa Capitals in two straight games. At the last 16U qualifying tournament, the Raiders team won the bronze medal. As for the past three seasons, the Raiders 16U are on their way to qualifying for Tier 1 competition which includes the top ranked 16U teams in the province.

The 16U Raiders then competed in the 17U McGregor Cup Zone B Qualifying Tournament hosted this past weekend in Burlington.The Raiders went undefeated in pool play and proceeded through the quarter finals defeating London Forest City 2-0 games and then fought their way through the semifinals against the Cambridge Hawks winning 2-1. The Raiders prevailed in the marathon championship match defeating Oakville Thunder 2-1 to win their second gold medal in two weeks.

The team is coached by Jos Nederveen of Dundas, who is assisted by Brian Fedak of Stoney Creek. The roster includes Brittany Wingrove, Erin Trinier and Kaitlyn Krizmanich of Carlisle, Marla Allison of Lynden and Sarah Rosso of Waterdown.
