Washing away wasteful habits

Dear Editor,

I am an 11-year-old student at Allan A. Greenleaf School. For the seven years I have been in school, there have always been at least three water bottles on the desks in my class. That got me thinking, if there are the average two or more classes per grade and ten grades in my elementary school, that’s 25 classes. Seventy-five bottles a day! If eight out of 10 bottles end up in landfill, that means 52 bottles will get thrown out.

Approximately 11,960 bottles will be thrown out for just my school.

Did you know that it takes three litres of water to make one litre of bottled water? When you get a bottle of water, you wasted three times as much as you used. If you get a reusable water bottle, you will save the environment and money. A reusable water bottle can cost as much as $20, but will save you cash. It will only take you 20 uses to save money.

All around, the reusable bottle is great so go out and feel proud that you drink from the tap. So remember the first R... “reduce.”
