LETTER TO THE EDITOR: On the airwaves

News Mar 31, 2010 Flamborough Review

The air time spent on this latest decision by the CRTC concerning 'fee for carriage' has me wondering  why  local TV stations need more money.

From my point of view they've enjoyed decades of free retransmission of their programs over the cable and satellite companies’ equipment. Where else but in Canada can one private company be allowed to use another private company’s equipment and not pay for it?

Frankly, the cable and satellite companies should charge the local TV stations if they want have their programs aired over those services. Perhaps a debt repayment scheme is in order, to make up for the decades of freebies they've had.

There is no way that we, as  cable customers should have to pay one cent for a product we can get  free through the airwaves.

The local TV stations need to tighten their belts like the rest of us. Selling the corporate jets and getting  rid of the high priced executives would be one place to start.
