It was a proud moment for the community and the Waterdown-East Flamborough Heritage Society (WEFHS) last Friday as the new Flamborough coat of arms and flag were presented to the Society by the Rt. Rev. Ralph Spence, retired Anglican bishop of Niagara. The formal presentation took place at the heritage group’s annual general meeting at the Carlisle Golf and Country Club where close to 150 guests gathered to share in the celebration.
Rt. Rev. Spence of Hamilton presented an entertaining and informative speech about flags, including many that are personal standards of the Royal Family, before presenting the grant of arms and flag in his capacity as Albion Herald Extraordinary.
WEFHS president Nathan Tidridge, who headed up the volunteer citizens’ committee that worked on the project for the past two years, told the crowd that there is still a lot of work to be done in promoting the new arms and flag, but he envisions the day when the flag will be ”dancing in the wind on porches, poles and buildings” throughout the community.
One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of three Flamborough flag prototypes to former Waterdown businessman Ernie Weeks, who recently celebrated his 100th birthday.
