The first beer available for sale by Dundas’ new craft brewery was unveiled last week in Hamilton’s leading craft beer bar.
Augusta’s Winking Judge began offering Shawn and Ed Brewing Company’s BarrelShed Lager last Wednesday evening – and customers at the small bar at 25 Augusta St. polished off the first keg that night. By opening time Saturday, the bar was on its third keg of BarrelShed.
While the craft brewery at 65 Hatt St. has not yet officially opened to the public, they started brewing a month ago. A site inspection by Ontario’s Alcohol and Gaming Commission has been completed, and the brewery is waiting for its retail licence to be approved.
“We are not far now,” said co-owner Ed Madronich.
Winking Judge co-owners Al Churchill and Maria Italia were at the bar Saturday afternoon. The group, along with fellow co-owner Bill Rea, has known Rob Creighton – the Dundas brewery’s brewmaster, for many years.
“He kept telling us – it’s coming, it’s coming,” Churchill said of the first Shawn and Ed Brewing product. “(Rob) makes pretty good beer.
“He made sure we got the first barrel.”
The Winking Judge has been offering only craft beer for nearly two decades on Augusta Street, while Creighton has previously made beer at several Ontario craft breweries over the past 20 years – including Grand River Brewing.
Churchill called Barrelshed a malty, “high-octane” beer – which comes in at eight per cent alcohol.
