CAMBRIDGE – Arson is suspected as the cause of a blaze that caused an estimated $25,000 damage to a vacant Beverly Street factory, Friday (March 18).

City firefighters from four fire stations were called to the vacant factory at 201 Beverly St. in Galt at about 2 p.m. Friday, where they found a small fire started on the exterior of the building had crept into the rafters of the structure.

Firefighters immediately conducted a search of the building and found roughly 500 square feet of the structure to have been occupied by homeless people, however no one was found inside the factory at the time of the blaze.

The fire was quickly doused, but the damage to the structure was such that city inspectors were called in and a section of the building was subsequently demolished.

Police and fire officials are continuing their investigation of the fire as locks on the building had been tampered with. Following the fire a representative of the owner called in a renovations company to once again secure the building.
