A power outage has left Beverly Central School running on emergency power.

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board spokesperson Jackie Penman said the power went out at the west Flamborough school around 11:30 a.m. She said the power is expected to be restored by 1:15 p.m.

She said students and staff remain at the school and emergency lighting has been activated in classrooms and the hallways.

However, Hydro One spokesperson Tiziana Baccega Rosa said the outage affecting the Beverly Central area is expected to be restored by 2 p.m. The outage, which was caused by the ice storm, affects 1,859 customers.

She said another outage, affecting the Freelton area affects 2,377 customers. Power is expected to be restored by 6 p.m.

Wesmount Secondary School, as well as Buchanan Park, Westview and Westwood elementary schools were closed this morning due to a downed power line.

Penman said the decision was made to close the school in that case because power was not expected to be restored before dismissal.

All other Hamilton Catholic and public schools are open today, but Halton Catholic and public schools are closed.
